Helen I. Pontius National Award of Merit

PURPOSE

The purpose of this award is to recognize women who have made outstanding contributions to Women In Leisure Services, Chi Kappa Rho and the field of Leisure Services.

NOMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

Each chapter may submit one nomination for the Helen I. Pontius Award. Nominations submitted during the past three years shall be referred to their home chapter to be reconsidered for re-nomination.

The travel expenses for the Helen I. Pontius Award Recipient to attend the National Luncheon shall be paid one half by National and one half by the chapter who nominated the winner.

NOMINATION ELIGIBILITY & QUALIFICATIONS

  1. The candidate shall have been a member of Chi Kappa Rho for a minimum of 5 years. (5 points)

  2. The candidate shall have been a professional in the leisure services field for a minimum of 15 years. (5 points)

  3. The candidate shall have met a minimum of five (5) conditions listed below with emphasis on contributions to Chi Kappa Rho. (Minimum 25 points)

    1. Member of a chapter committee three or more years; committees may be standing and/or ad hoc.

    2. Chair of a chapter committee 3 or more years; committees may be standing and/or ad hoc. Chapter committee chair experience submitted to meet this qualification shall not be concurrent with chapter committee membership submitted for 3.1.

    3. Officer of a chapter 1 or more years.

    4. Member of a national committee 1 or more years; committee may be standing and/or ad hoc.

    5. Chair of a national committee one or more years; committee may be standing and/or ad hoc. National committee chair experience submitted to meet this qualification shall not be concurrent with national committee membership submitted for 3.4.

    6. Officer of the national board 1 or more years.

    7. Introduced new ideas, concepts or practices with successful and effective results at the chapter and/or national level.

    8. Authored or co-authored a minimum of one or more articles related to Chi Kappa Rho published in handbooks, newspapers, or professional magazines/journals. (Attach copies of article(s).)

    9. Presented five (5) or more addresses before Chi Kappa Rho gatherings and/or before groups that benefited Chi Kappa Rho members. 

  4. The candidate shall have met a minimum of three (3) conditions listed below with emphasis on contributions to leisure services professional organizations. (Minimum of 15 points)

    1. Member and/or chair of five (5) committees at a local, regional, state or national level of leisure services professional organization.

    2. Officer at the local, regional, state or national level of a leisure services professional organization for a minimum of three (3) years.

    3. Presented ten (10) or more addresses before professional gatherings, which benefited the leisure services field. Addresses shall be separate from any listed to meet qualification 3-9.

    4. Carried on research, which benefited or promoted the leisure services field.

    5. Authored or co-authored two (2) or more articles in a state or national professional magazine. Articles shall be separate from any listed to meet qualification 3-8. (Attach copies of articles.)

  5. The candidate shall have volunteered time benefiting a humanitarian organization for a minimum of three (3) years. Organizations may include, but are not limited to: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YWCA, American Youth Soccer Organization, Special Olympics, a community hospital, and/or local community non-profit organizations. (Minimum 5 points)

  6. The candidate shall have three (3) letters of support for the candidate's nomination submitted on her behalf (1 professional, 1 community organization, and 1 personal ).
